Neues Semester, neues Projekt!
Here it is:

Abstract: The Super Nanny
For the investigation of a media product in the current semester the research group chooses “The Super Nanny”, a coaching-format in which a pedagogue helps families by educating their difficult children. It is an interesting format due to its international success and the question whether the family situation is real or if the family members are only paid actors in a fictional story. Especially because probably all of us will be in the situation to have an own family in the future, the “Super Nanny” is very interesting to research on. Another reason for the choice is that one of the group members knows the producer of the German version of “The Super Nanny” so that it will be easier to get answers for the research questions.
The main topic of the research will be a comparison of the “Super Nanny” in Germany, Romania and the USA. It will include a list of the similarities and the differences between the three shows. The research group will orientate its research questions to the COT-Model of Paul Klimsa which deals with content, organization and technology. Concerning the content the group will analyze the personality and the appearance of the Super Nanny as well as which image she represents. In addition to that, the structure of the format will be one of the main interests of the research. The task is here to analyze the sequence of the scenes, for example there is always set first the introduction of the family, then the different methods the pedagogue uses to solve the problem and in the end, mostly, a solution for the family problems. Another part of the content is the international comparison of the families, one focus could be their social status.
The organizational part will be presented through questions concerning the reality of the format that means, if the family members are just actors or if their call for help is real. A further question could be the intention of the inventor of “The Super Nanny”, what he wanted to achieve with this format and for which reasons he chose this specific structure of the show for realizing his intention. The technical aspect can be included in the research by investigating how the sound and the lights influence emotions and atmosphere. A worms’ eye view, for instance, produces an aggressive image of a person or with sad music the hopelessness of the parents or children is underlined.
To carry out the comparison between the three “Super Nanny”-formats the research group will mostly use the observation. This includes the analysis of the characters, the structure of the format and the technical support. Organizational aspects like the truth of the format or the intention of the inventor will be investigated by an interview with the producer of the “Super Nanny”.
